On the Charlie Kirk shooting.
I don’t have very many thoughts on this if I’m being honest. Nothing you’re going to read here hasn’t been said by anyone else. Perhaps you’ll find that refreshing.
It’s been pretty obvious to me for some time that the label of “fascist” means target, and that label has been increasingly applied to anyone who is straight, white and normal, let alone slightly right-of-center. It is completely unsurprising that this rhetoric has resulted in violence once again.
Charlie Kirk was, (generally speaking), not in the same field of politics as I am. We disagreed on pretty much anything and everything despite sharing common enemies. However, I think he held a more optimistic view of our country’s future than I do, and I think that informed his politics. This is obviously much different from the sort of political opponent who wants to see this country extinguished.
It is sad that a father and husband was killed for nothing more than words. It is incredible that his viewpoints were ever deemed “radical” enough to “justify” such an event, (and justified is exactly how most leftists have portrayed this assasination. Make no mistake, holding viewpoints that your own father would have seen as common sense is “justification” to make your wife a widow to around a quarter of your countrymen.
There is a certain subset of the online right who seems dedicated to finding a way to turn this into a conspiracy theory. There isn’t one. This was an assasination by a leftist who was radicalized online. It was probably him acting alone, and if it wasn’t then he was working with a set of other leftists who were radicalized either online or at university. It was a shot that I could have taken at age 14 on a nearly unguarded college campus, and there is no reason to believe that these kinds of people aren’t perfectly willing to commit violence against you.
This doesn’t get better. This does not go away. The only way forward is to remove the people who call for these actions from any position of power and authority, and their allies won’t allow this to be done without a stir.
America is in for interesting times indeed.
