One of the hard realities throughout the last several generations is realizing when your personal growth is at odds with your attachment to someone.

I think we all have someone who was a good friend growing up and is loyal but has confined themselves to nothing. For me, they dropped out of college at least 4 times, spend every cent on weed, and only care about sports. Good guy but a tough decision.

I've found that loyalty itself is a disciplined trait. The same self-discipline required to be productive and achieve your goals is also required to maintain loyalty in the face of easy gains by screwing someone over. Better to cut someone out if they demonstrate a lack of self-discipline before it manifests itself as disloyalty.
